What Would Mr. Rogers Do?

Public broadcasting has been part of our lives for a LONG time. Here's Alice at about 1 year old, with her mom, Annie Lin, and Mr. Rogers. Public Broadcasting is probably as much a part of your family as it and Mr. Rogers are a part of ours.

Why does Public Broadcasting deserve the small investment of support it receives? Simple. It changes lives. How's that for "ROI?" Public Broadcasting has faced relentless attempts to eliminate it. Why is that? Why would Public Broadcasting so frequently be on the chopping block? More importantly, why have these attacks historically failed?

Mr. Rogers himself defended Public Broadcasting decades ago. His comments ring true today.

It was 1969 when Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood appeared before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications to express his disagreement with a proposal by President Richard Nixon to cut federal funding for public broadcasting. Rogers detailed the guiding influence of television, and helped sway the Senate’s decision to leave funding for public broadcasting intact.

Alice Ferris just finished hosting her first pledge drive shift of the night. She's on the air statewide for Eight, Arizona PBS right now, wrapped up "Great Scenic Railway Journeys" next up "CanadianTenors" and later tonight she hosts the "Elaine Paige" program.

Mary W. Black Mary W. Black Just saw you on Channel 8! Love those Railway Journeys! Great Job Alice!

Winona Reid Winona Reid She's doing a great job! I just turned to channel 8 since the CELTICS WON!! She's a celebrity now! :-)

Jim Anderson Jim Anderson Winona, Alice has been doing public Television pledge drives since she was 15. She's been on camera since her early 20s, First for Wisconsin Public Television. She's been volunteering for KAET, AZ PBS and KUAT Tucson PBS for 14 years. (Wow!) She does 4-5 television pledge drives a year, or about 15-20 hours of HD TV airtime (multiply that 2-3x for state-wide public radio). Frequently, she's approached by people asking if she the "Public Television" lady? She also has 4 different "virtual" (pre-recorded) pledge drive programs airing throughout the country. At any given moment, she's on the air in apx 100 major cities nationwide.

Alice Ferris Alice Ferris Thanks Mary! It was a long shift, but a good time! - Hey Winona, yes, all of what Jim said is true...although I'm now either the "Lawrence Welk lady," the "Cooks lady," or now "the Train (as in railroad) girl." Not a bad gig.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: Alice Ferris Earns ACFRE

NEWS: Alice Ferris Earns Highest Professional Fundraising Credential from AFPDate: April 2010
For Release: Immediate
Contact:
Cathlene Williams, Ph.D., CAE
Association of Fundraising Professionals

(Arlington, VA) – The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the largest community of professional fundraisers in the world, has awarded its highest professional certification, the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), to Alice L. Ferris of Flagstaff, AZ.

Available only to senior-level fundraisers who have worked in the profession for 10 or more years, the ACFRE is a distinguished achievement earned by only 90 professionals since the inception of the program in 1992.

The ACFRE program is the most rigorous certification process available to professional fundraisers. The process includes a comprehensive application, detailing achievements in practice, education, publishing, teaching, and service to the profession; a written examination that measures a candidate’s knowledge of fundraising as well as the philosophical, ethical, and social aspects of philanthropy; a portfolio representing the candidate’s body of professional work; and an oral peer review in which the candidate must articulate a mastery of advanced-level knowledge in fundraising management, leadership, and ethics.

The ACFRE Certification Board of AFP, chaired by Karla A. Williams, ACFRE, oversees the ACFRE candidate review process. Ms. Ferris was honored for her achievement during AFP’s 47th International Conference on Fundraising in Baltimore, in April 2010.

Ms. Ferris is founding partner of GoalBusters Consulting, LLC, a consulting firm providing strategic planning, campaign leadership, special event coordination, social media marketing, fundraising training and board development. Clients include public broadcasting stations, rural healthcare clinics, educational causes, Native American organizations, rural and small development shops, and others.

Ms. Ferris serves as Vice Chair for Member and Chapter Services for the AFP International Board of Directors and also as President of the AFP Northern Arizona Chapter. Alice also serves on the boards of the Flagstaff Rotary Club and the Flagstaff Cooperative Preschool. In addition, Ms. Ferris contributes substantial volunteer time as an on-air host for Arizona PBS (Phoenix, Ariz.), Arizona Public Media (Tucson, Ariz.) and other nonprofit video production.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), which represents nearly 30,000 members in 212 chapters throughout the world, advances philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. AFP fosters the professional development of fundraising professionals and promotes ethical standards in the fundraising profession. For more information, visit www.afpnet.org.
